34th Annual Tribune Cup Regatta – Sunday

Sunday dawned a new day with lighter winds.  We hit the race course at 9:30am and took the first gun at 9:45am.  6 San Juan 21’s were in the first start (though a couple were pretty late getting to the line – something about not being able to get out of bed (Jack?).
The SJ21’s were followed by the Open Fleet of 5 boats varying from 28 to 23 feet, including a Newport 28, a Catalina 250, an Aquarius 23, a Venture 24 and a Comet 24 Tri-hull.

With great work and course selection by the Race Committee headed up by Jeff Hanson, we were able to get in 4 races in great conditions.  There were a few white caps at times, a few close calls, a few penalty turns (sorry for the scare, Don) and a few great tacking duels.   The racing was close and everyone had a case of perma-grin by then end of racing at 2:30pm.

Result and pictures soon . . .

34th Annual Tribune Cup Regatta – Saturday Night

By 6:00pm we called it a day and headed either to camp or to home.  For Tom Weza, home is his 50′ sailboat Faith which was anchored out west of the island.  The night was a continuation of the daytime drama.  As Tom put it:

I considered the winds of Saturday night a training experience. We were anchored a bit too close to a lee shore, which seemed to get closer as darkness fell.  I have to admit to being a little worried about my anchor dragging.

Three times during the night, the wind would die down, and then we would be hit broadside with gusts estimated at about 45 knots.  That’s over 50 mph!  The big boat would heel very suddenly to about 12 deg. and I would be wishing for lee cloths to hold me in bed.  I was quite happy when the wind finally died down.

My anchor held without dragging, even though we swung wildly around it.  I have a little 75 lb SuperMax anchor, held with about 15 ft of 7/16″ chain and 150 ft of 3/4″ rope.  I has never dragged, but in strong winds like that, and in a soft mud bottom, I watch it closely.  Raising the anchor with an under powered windlass is very difficult for one person, who is already very tired.  And after the Sunday races, I was far too tired to sail back to the marina, so we motored the six miles.

34th Annual Tribune Cup Regatta – Saturday

The 34th Annual Tribune Cup Regatta was held on the weekend of Sept 19-20,2009.

The welcoming easterly breeze that greeted sailors has they arrived Saturday morning was a cruel tease, leaving sailors unprepared for what was to come.

After a brief skipper’s meeting a little after 11:00am, the fleet headed out on flat water, preparing for a day of racing.   At 11:45am the conditions took a turn for the worse.   In matter of minutes, maybe only seconds, the reflecting waters of the Snake River turned dark, soon the be painted with waves tipped in white, as the winds quickly increased to 20mph + with gust in the upper 30’s. Fall Series 2009

LCSA racers,

The fall series will kick off on October 3rd.  Racing will be held on the Snake River west of the Hells Canyon Resort Marina (Red Wolf Bridge)

The schedule will be Oct 3, 10, 24, 31 and Nov 14, 21st if needed for a
makeup.  Note: These are Saturday dates

Skippers meeting if needed will be at 11:00 AM
Racing will start at 12:00 PM
No races will start after 4:00 PM

If there is no wind or wind is too heavy to race the race will not be
called before 2:00 PM

Everyone with a boat should come down and have some fun. I have found
racing to be a great way to learn more about sailing and get a feel for
how well you are doing. Other boats around give a great barometer and
quite frequently remind you that you still have a ways to go  :) in
learning the intricacies of our sport.
